I made this coloring for Star Trek caps, but found that it worked well with other subjects as well so I thought I'd share.

!remember, remember, remember: all images are different, and so all results will be different. take that into consideration please.

1. open your image, crop to 100x100px, blah blah blah.

I usually use HQ caps that don't need much preparation, but if you think your image might need it, go ahead and do so.

2. Duplicate base layer set to Screen [op:100%] (optional / you might even need 2 or 3 of these depending on your image)

3. Duplicate base layer again, bring to the top and set to Soft Light [op:46-86% depends on image] (optional / you might not even need a soft light layer.)

4. Make a new Levels layer, and use these settings:

Input: 44, 0.87, 235
Output: 15, 193

5. Make a new Color Balance layer, and use these settings:

MIDTONES: +5, -11, +4
HIGHLIGHTS: +5, +9, -2
SHADOWS: +2, +5, +3

6. Make a new Selective Color layer, and use these settings:

REDS: -28, 0, +16, -5
YELLOWS: -13, +6, +75, +55
WHITES: -100, -55, -21, +100
NEUTRALS: +6, +3, +7, +13
BLACKS: -4, -2, -3, -4

7. Make a new Curves layer, and use these settings:

RGB:
1st. Output: 99 ; Input: 80
2nd. Output: 226 ; Input: 173

8. (optional! this was not used on this icon, but it was used on some of the examples. this is what it looks like WITH this layer.) Make a new Curves layer, and use these settings:

RGB:
1st. Output: 79 ; Input: 115
2nd. Output: 121 ; Input: 143
3rd. Output: 0 ; Input: 32

9. (optional!) Make a new layer. Take a round 65px soft edged brush in white, and use it over the places you want a little lighter. Set the layer to 8-15% opacity. Or just use the texture given and set to Screen with 8-15% opacity.

(I usually make a decent sized circle in the middle of the icon, but it really depends on where the subject is, and what you prefer.)

10. (optional!) Use the Unsharp Mask (amount: 15, radius: 1.0px) do this 2 to 3 times, or whatever you prefer.

11. Merge all, save (preferrably to .png),

This is what I usually do when finishing this kind of icon, it might be a little tedious, but that's just me: click that little eye beside the brush layer so it's invisible, and merge all the other layers (or click on a visible layer, CTRL E). Go to FILTER > SHARPEN > UNSHARP MASK, set the amount to sharpen about 15 (w/ the radius set to 1.0px) and do this 2 to 3 times. Make your brush layer visible again, merge all, and save. :D

Tutorial #8: MiChi Coloring

Some screencaps included along with settings.

1. Open your image in PS, crop to 100x100px.

2. Duplicate the base layer and set to Soft Light. (if you think your image is too dark, duplicate your base again and set to Screen [opacity: 8-25%]

3. Make a new Levels layer.

Settings: 0 - 0.88 - 249
23 - 255

4. Make a new Color Balance layer.

Depending on your image, these settings may vary quite a bit. You're image may look very desaturated. So if you're using these settings, make sure your image has strong/warm colors.

ex: with these settings:
(It isn't "bad", but definitely not what I wanted.)

Settings:

MIDTONES: Cyan: -31; Magenta: -14; Yellow: -23
HIGHLIGHTS: Cyan: -51; Magenta: -18; Yellow: -19
SHADOWS: Cyan: +1; Yellow: -7

5. Make a new Selective Color layer.

Settings:

REDS/ Cyan: +61; Yellow: +25; Black: +23

6. Make a new Curves layer.

Settings:

RGB: Point 1: Ouput: 125; Input: 110
Point 2: Output: 144; Input: 128

7. Take this texture [made by me], and set to Soft Light [opacity: 20%]

8. Take this texture [made by me], and set to Soft Light [opacity: 100%]

9. Make a new layer, and fill with the color [#790000]. A very dark red. Set layer to Exclusion [opacity: 14%]

10. [optional, I just like making icons a little softer looking with a white haze.] I freehanded these textures, so I'll let you do the same.

I used a round soft edged white brush. Make 2 new layers.
First texture [layer 1]: wipe it across the bottom, and set to [opacity: 5%]
Second texture [layer 2]: make an oval shape in the middle of the icon, and set to [opacity: 9%]

And you're done!
